Astrology has 4 important different levels of interpretation:

Level 1: The Planets
The planets are the main focus of astrology. Astrologers use the 7 traditional planets, which include the Sun and the Moon, as the primary focus. These are the planets that beginning students need to focus upon, as all life on Earth is composed of an admixture of these 7 planets. These 7 planets provide the foundation upon which all other astrological learning takes place, and they need to be thoroughly understood before proceeding to other aspects of astrology.

Level 1: The Planets

Each of these planets represents a type of archetypal energy – a basic form of energy which describes basic needs and functions.

For example the Moon describes the mothering principle, nurturing and caring, how we like to be nurtured, women in general, and our emotions. It also has other associated meanings.

The 3 outer planets, Uranus Neptune and Pluto, are called the ‘transcendental’ planets, as they transcend earthly affairs. These planets are used by more advanced students.

Level 2: The Zodiacal Signs
The signs of the zodiac are like adjectives which describe the planets. If the planets can be likened to actors upon a stage, then the signs are like the costumes worn by the actors.

Level 2: The SIgns

It is very important to understand how the how the 7 traditional planets function in the different signs of the zodiac. In some signs they function particularly well, and in some signs they function very poorly.

For example Venus, the natural ruler of relationships, functions very well in the sign of Libra. Here there is diplomacy and poise, and an excellent ability to anticipate the needs of others. However when Venus is placed in the sign of Aries, diplomacy is replaced by assertiveness and sometimes by aggressiveness and the needs of oneself are promoted first before the needs of others.

Level 3: The Houses
If the planets are like the actors on the stage, and the if the zodiacal signs can be likened to their costumes, then the houses are like the various stages in which they find themselves. Together the 12 houses describe everything within life. Everything in existence can be located in one of the 12 houses.

Level 3: The Houses

The house in which your natal planets are found show the areas of life in which these energies manifest.

To these 3 levels we can add a fourth, which is the way the planets function together in their signs and houses, and how they interrelate with each other.

The 3 levels combined together

The study of the 3 primary levels of astrology, plus the fourth level of how the 7 basic planetary energies function together in the horoscope, is a fascinating study. The horoscope shows a complex structure, which reflects the complexity of human beings.

These astrological principles can be used to describe any aspect of earthly existence, including business, politics, fashion, culture, the weather and the future.
