The word “horary” comes from Latin, meaning “of the hour”. We see the root word ‘hor’ in the word ‘horoscope’ and ‘ ‘horology’, which has to do with the study of time keeping devices such as clocks and watches.

Horary Astrology is that branch of astrology which seeks to answer specific questions by drawing up a horoscope for the moment a question is received and understood by the astrologer. The assumption behind all astrology is that the birth of anything, whether it be a person, corporation, nation or question, takes on the qualities of the time and place of the birth.

A horary question is similar to a birth chart, except that it is the birth of a question that is being answered. The horoscope for a horary question will show the specific quality of time at which the question was asked, and the natural rhythm and flow of this unique quality of time into the future.

The apparently chance moment at which the question is asked reveals everything in the past that has led to that question, and the natural flow of events relating to it in the future. Of course nothing happens by chance, and the moment the question is asked, no matter how trivial the circumstances surrounding it may seem to be, is considered to be very significant.

Horary Astrology differs from other branches of astrology, such as Natal Astrology, in that it follows a precise set of rules. These rules enable judgement to be made regarding the question, based on the testimony of planetary conditions and aspects relevant to the question.

This branch of astrology is very ancient, and deals with specific answers to specific questions. There is no need for personal details relating to birth time, date and place, which is the normal requirement for an accurate natal chart. This resolves the difficulty experienced by many people who do not have an exact time of birth.
